Abstract / Description

This is a picture of P4HE activities to include podcasts, webinars, interactive sessions, and member activities. The Partners for Health Equity (P4HE) collaborative promotes innovation in health equity by facilitating active learning and collaboration between people and organizations about critical health equity topics. In 2023, P4HE Collaborative grew from 212 to 502 members across academia (48%), civil sector (21%), government (16%), private (8%), and philanthropy (7%).

As of January 1, 2024, P4HE has curated more than 630 resources in our action-oriented health equity library. Additionally, leveraging 2022’s Lessons in Health Equity, P4HE led 12 virtual engagements on moving to action for health equity. Through our webinars, experts and members explored health equity themes in relation to:

What has the P4HE Collaborative learned so far? And how can those lessons be leveraged to impact change?

Workshops offered a space to build skills for health equity action through exploring health equity measurement, evidence synthesis, and community systems dynamics. Key takeaways from our webinars and workshops include:

  • Move beyond talking about health equity and into action through community focused cross sector collaboration.
    • “There are a lot of vulnerable communities that have been under attack… …We need to move to action. Less conversations about action and more action.” - Hanh Cao Yu, Chief Learning Officer, The California Endowment
  • Standardize definitions of health equity and related terms to increase effective collaboration.
    • "People have this narrow definition of health… …We [need to] think of health more broadly and functionally.” - Colin Killick, Executive Director, Disability Policy Consortium
  • Acknowledge individual identities, cultures, values, and health needs when working towards health equity.
    • "We need to rethink the monocultural way we are thinking about health. We are millions of human beings with our own cultures, our own identities.” - Vivian Tatiana Camacho Hinojosa, National Director of Ancestral Traditional Medicine, Vice Ministry of Ancestral Traditional Medicine, Ministry of Health of the Plurinational State of Bolivia
  • Listen to the viewpoints of those with lived experience, community advocates, and of fellow collaborators before acting.
  • Hold leaders responsible to ensure their actions and decisions accurately reflect the values and priorities of the communities they represent.
  • Invest in communities and community-based organizations to drive sustainable change.
  • Educate communities so that they can become strong advocates and partners in the advancement of health equity.

Next steps for health equity. Our collective lessons in health equity have centralized the need to uplift community voices. Effective action will leverage collaboration for human-centered, community-driven solutions that impact underlying structures and contribute to cultural change.
